Our Mission

Our mission is to provide personalized, high-end physical therapy and performance services to empower clients to achieve their physical goals and live healthier lives. We aim to create a supportive and inspirational environment that meets clients where they are, while providing effective and approachable care.

Intentional Treatment

1 on 1 care with a Doctor of Physical Therapy meeting you in your home, office, or gym. We provide patient specific evidence based treatment methods driven by each client’s case and unique goals.

Goal Oriented

Goals are paramount to measuring successful treatment and everyone has them… even if clients need help from me to find them. It can be as specific and high level as a desire “to run a marathon” or “lift x amount of weight”. Or, it could be as simple as wanting to play with your kids and not feel slowed down or not having to alter your desired workouts or activities due to pain. If it is important to you and you are unable to do it, it is important to me to try to bridge the gap from where you are and where you want to be

Building Independence

Creating autonomy and independence in a client means they are able to gain education and answers, proper exercise programming, and coaching along with PT treatment in order to remove me from the picture sooner and make progress on their own leading to quicker results with less visits. This also can lead to better injury prevention in the future and expert knowledge to know what to do if flare ups occur.

Flexible Scheduling

Life happens and each person’s desired schedules can vary greatly. This should not limit a person’s access to top notch care. Therefore, we do our very best to offer a large variety of appointment times including early mornings, late evenings, and weekends. Consistency is important to any improvement and by providing flexible scheduling, consistency is easier to achieve.

Evidence Based

Unfortunately, health care providers don’t have ALL the answers. However, research is continuously done to provide answers or insight to guide treatment in the most efficient way to help a higher percentage of people struggling from pain and injury. This is why it is so important to stay up to date and current on the best practices to ensure the highest level of care.

Honest and Transparent

I want to help you, plain and simple. Even if that means that I need to refer you to someone else that has a better understanding of what you are going through. I am always honest and transparent about what I think is going on, treatment game plan, and the why behind everything we are doing.

Prior to working with Matt, I'd had a poor experience with the typical Ortho / PT process. Long wait times, bad bedside manner, big bills, dispassionate care givers and ultimately lackluster results. I had acute shoulder pain at the time I had reached out to Matt for a diagnosis, and I wanted to determine how serious the injury was, and whether it would be okay to play beach volleyball in the upcoming season. I'm an active person, but I know that it's important to listen to your body, and my shoulder was pinching and sore. I'd let the initial pain subside, but I still did not feel 100%. Matt was able to quickly diagnose tendonitis in the rotator cuff after about 30 minutes of observations. What I enjoyed about working with Matt, is that he took the time to explain physiologically what was happening with my tendon, how the movements work between the shoulder blade and muscles, and advised me on a course of action to get me back to my goal of playing volleyball. Matt was professional throughout our 6 session engagement. Great followup, great communication, super knowledgable and authentically invested in my progress. Since seeing Matt, my tendonitis dissipated within weeks. I was back on the volleyball court without missing a game. I subsequently received care for two unrelated nagging injuries, achilles tendonitis and a tight ankle from a sprain. Matt created a bespoke routine to address all three injuries allowing me to run, skateboard and gain confidence to push my body by helping me create resiliency. For anyone who has had issues with the typical health care protocol when it comes to endless x-rays, MRIs, and unengaged physicians, I strongly recommend working with Matt to help you achieve your mobility goals.

Since rehabbing with SFPTP i have seen a great improvement in my return to Achilles functionality after rupturing my Achilles. I was given exercises that were slow yet progressive to ensure I would get back to as close as possible to how I was before the surgery. Matt was always very responsive to any questions I had and brought an enthusiasm to each session that made a big difference compared to others Physical Therapists I tried.

I am in my early 70s and suffered a stress heart attack just as we all went into COVID lock-down in 2020. I slowly built back my stamina via a home treadmill. I know how important it is to exercise regularly but I was not motivated to do anything other than walk on the treadmill or in nature. Then in 2023 a good friend told me about working with Matt and highly recommended him if I wanted to work out at home instead of at a gym. Matt and I discussed my goals of increasing my stamina, improving my balance, and strengthening my core. I also wanted to address some issues that I’d previously treated with physical therapy. With Matt’s expertise in both PT and personal training, he has coached me through a series of exercises that address all these areas, explaining their impact on the body and what a difference it will make in activities of daily life. I always learn something during our sessions. He has increased the challenge as I have made progress, always careful to check in and make sure that I am able to handle anything new with good form. I can do the exercises on my own in between our sessions. Working with Matt helps keep me accountable to do that. Matt also has a great sense of humor and manages to infuse the work with fun. I recommend him highly.

Matt has been my personal trainer for about 4 months now and I have been so happy with the results! I had a baby a year ago and it was so difficult to shed those final lbs of baby weight. When I first met Matt, I shared with him the areas I wanted to focus on and since then, he has curated a program to help me meet my goals. I can tell he listens and genuinely cares about what I want to accomplish. But at the same time, he knows how to motivate me and kick my butt - which I also need! For that, I am very grateful and can't recommend him enough! You won't regret it!

I am not a person who is naturally drawn to exercise. I take good care of my health, but for some reason, regular gym attendance does not come naturally. Pre-pandemic, I had a trainer that worked well for me and was in the best shape of my life. Then came Covid and his move across the country. Even though I exercised, I got flabby, and my balance and flexibility deteriorated. Post-pandemic, I wanted to find a new trainer, but wasn’t working very hard at it. Then a neighbor recommended Matt, and he and I had a conversation. I was impressed with his knowledge and skills, his perspective on health and collaborative style. Matt’s expertise is deep. He is thoughtful about putting an exercise program together, tailoring it to the individual. His focus is on function…what will make the most difference in everyday life? What are the most important strengths and skills to have? He is thorough and explains what and why we’re doing something, so that I’m more educated and can do workouts on my own. Matt is great about sharing what is being learned about the body, what is best for it, and what isn’t. When we started, he knew where I lacked confidence (Squats! Lunges!) and has given me challenges that build not only my fitness, but my confidence in what I can do. In the relatively short time I’ve been working with Matt, I already feel stronger and more energetic. I’m walking taller and my clothes are fitting better. Rather than avoiding the gym, I’m eager to keep up the work. Working with Matt has been a great gift, and I highly recommend him, whether you are just starting a fitness regimen or are more advanced and want to take it to the next level.

I've been thrilled with my physical therapy treatment from Matt Kuik! I suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon which requires significant recovery. I searched for an experienced physical therapist that was willing to work with me in my home in Marin. Matt has excellent experience, a caring demeanor, and extensive knowledge of how to build a rehab plan. Matt helped to set my expectations on the rehab plan, milestones to target, and made the exercises easy to understand. Matt made himself available by phone or email if I had any questions about the plan. I highly recommend him!

Matt Kuik is arguably the highest performing physical therapist in the SF Bay Area. I tried five other highly rated therapists for three years before I worked with Matt for the next two years. Besides his knowledge of his trade, professionalism and personability, Matt's problem solving mindset helped me treat an injury that did not have a textbook set of exercises one could throw at it. I was impressed by how he could listen, process different dimensions of feedback and iterate on what was working. His curious personality leads him to develop a deeper understanding of his clients' needs, which makes working with him even more effective and enjoyable. Highly recommend!

I first met Matt when I was referred to him for sudden (and debilitating) neck pain. He worked with me on a few exercises and after only a couple days everything was back in order. When I was diagnosed with postpartum hip instability a couple of years later, I called Matt and made an appointment. He’s extremely thorough and knowledgeable and was attentive to my personal goals while also giving me realistic expectations. I really never thought I’d be able to run or exercise the way I wanted to. With his guidance I learned how to work with and around my body and am THRILLED to be running again. I highly recommend him!

I was lucky enough to hear about Matt Kuik from a friend who had greatly benefitted from his post operative physical therapy. I was looking for a trainer who would reteach me weight lifting to improve muscle mass, balance, and flexibility in such a way that I could carry on on my own while maintaining good form. I have to say, the sessions have been so informative and enjoyable, I think I will carry on for a while! I think Matt wrote the book on patience, and his teaching style is fun and low key, while being exact about form and position. I am already seeing progress after 4 sessions; and feel confident going to the gym on my own and replicating the workouts he has shown me...this is exactly what I was looking for! His knowledge about the human body, and its vagaries, is extensive, and he has a whole trove of work-arounds to avoid inflaming former injuries, and allowing you to progress even though there are certain things you can't do. If you are considering physical therapy or training, I highly recommend Matt Kuik and SF Physical Training and Performance...you can thank me later!
